Should always have at least one rope attached to the boat while on the lift just for the "what if" scenarios (pressure loss, damage to mechanism, etc). Some even leave the fenders in place. A majority of people at our marina tie their lifted boat up using four ropes although there are a few that use only one rope, and it goes through the bow eye.

Yes, definitely...cheap insurance against a total loss.

I usually put one on the bow and one on each side. I am probably going to add two more so if it does drop, it won't bang in to the dock.
