wiring nightmare!!!

well now that I have put the fuel system back in old timer, I started to reconnect the disconnected alternators. When I was tracing the wire I found that some wiring idiot has the boat wiried worst than I thought. coming off the charge side of the alternator they had a line running to an ammeter and from that the had it running straight to the battery with no regulator. on that same line they hooked up a wire that runs to a push fuse that is connected to the key switch. So even though I thought I would get old timer out soon to try the fuel fix I have decided to go ahead and rewire her so I don't end up with a fire next time we are on the water. so enjoy the lakes the rest of the season I will be pulling at least the front seat out of old timer and woring through the rats nest known as the wires on the boat. and I wil be taking pictures along the way for lake boss!! Shocked

That sounds like a wiring job someone did with the intention of catching the boat on fire for insurance. If you need a lake fix you can come out with us sometime since it looks like you'll be waiting until Spring.

I will get alot of time this weekend to work on it. My wife took off for our birthdays and anniversary. My birthday present is time to work on my boat. lol

No clue about the push fuse though.... ? If you're redoing it anyway, I'd lose the ammeter and use a volt meter on a keyed circuit.

After looking through the wires I am removing the ammeter because it has a volt meter. so I am going to use the yellow wire with the fuse as the main power for the dash. the alternator is an old one that doesn't have an internal regulator. I am going to take every switch out and test them and replace as needed. I am also going to add a bus for the ground instead of the floating in air bolt that they are conneccted to now.

worked on the eiring for about four or five hours this weekend. removed all the switches and ordered new ones. connected all grounds to spots on the ground post on gauages. also disconnected the main power wire for the dash (the yellow wire) from the direct output of the alternator and connected to battery. also put a depth sounder I had just sitting in my chaparral in place of the ammeter. just need the transducer for the sounder and the switches. when they come in I will have the new speaker, switches, alternator regulator, and new interior lights. still need to find a wiper motor that is not expensive or try to fix the ones I have. but enjoyed every minute.

between this weekend and halloween weekend I finshed the rewiring job. I also installed the speakers, the regulator for the alternator, and repacked the stuffing boxes. now all I need to do is put the seat back in and reinstall the trancducer for the depth finder that I installed. I got it started it today and she is sounding great again. when I get a chance I will install the hot foot. here are some pictures.
