Heat surgery
Aug 4th, 2010 at 5:01pm

So the Heat will be getting a new Merc Gimbal Ring, all new bushings, a new bellows, and various other new parts that wear out after 8 seasons -- and which are conveniently accessible since we're pulling the motor anyway.  Pricey repair -- but that just comes with boating.

Should be good as new in about a week or so.

To best get at and repair the gimbal ring, pulling the engine (and removing the outdrive) seems to be the preferred method.   Doing this also allows for visual inspection of other items not accessible without pulling the engine.  Not a big deal, just takes time.

I bet if I knew what that runs it'd keep me out of the Nordic (or any go fast boat for that matter) market Smiley

I'm sure it'll be nice having peace of mind for another eight seasons.

That's the way I look at it.   As with any machine, stuff wears out.   Motor, gears, pulleys, bearings, drives, shafts.  List goes on.   The load on these mechanisms is pretty incredible.  So, to get 8-1/2 seasons with remarkably few issues over that time -- if the time is now to make some things like new again and set the stage for more trouble-free boating -- that is what it is.   I'll just amortize cost in my mind....over the next 5 years.  Makes me feel better.

Just wish I had the funds to swap the motor for something bigger -- since it's out of the boat.   Alas.

Who's doing your repair?  Full Throttle?   That's a really good turn around time for during the summer.

I had similiar repairs in February 2009 and it took two weeks plus.

You missed out yesterday David, it was like a damn Nordic convention in Devil's Cove, I've never seen so many Nordics on the lake and in one place.

I've only seen 3 other Nordics on the lake before.  2 Heats, and Bob's 35 Flame.   What showed up this weekend?

Update:  Motor is out, and gimbal/related work underway.

Since everywhere around the motor is now (temporarily) 100% accessible, I'm having the oil pan gasket replaced.

Also having the rear bench seat seam fixed.

I'd say that by next weekend I'll be waterborne again.
