Jonestown City Council sets June 17 public hearing on lake enforcement
The Jonestown City Council has a problem with a piece of the devil’s property.
Devil’s Hollow Cove has been a longstanding destination for boaters, jet skiers and other Lake Travis regulars to tailgate, drink and play music — normally at high levels. Several Council members during the regular meeting June 10 spoke in support of tightening ordinances to stop blaring music and inappropriate behavior at the cove and other areas of the lake.
The topic of Devil’s Hollow Cove, the Sandy Creek area and general lake patrols started about halfway through the Council’s regular meeting June 10. Robert Donnelly, a Lakeside Drive resident, said he wanted to see a stronger presence by the Jonestown Police Department in the Sandy Creek area. He added there is a “profound inconsistency” with patrols between the Devil’s Hollow Cove and other areas of the lake. Because of this, he said, wakeboarders and boaters are allowed to act recklessly.
“In the middle of this stuff, you have kayakers, swimmers,” he said. “We’ve had wakeboarders jumping over swimmer’s heads.”
Alderman Robert Moore said he sees the same reckless behavior from his property, including wakeboarders jumping over a “no wake” buoy.
“It’s not funny,” he said. “They think it’s funny, but it’s not funny.”
Donnelly said boaters frequently break the 50-foot rule, which requires boats to operate at a no wake speed 50 feet within a dock.
“As soon as they (the police) leave,” he said, “they’re right back to what they’re doing.”
Jonestown Police Chief John Stetar, local police officers and members of North Lake Travis Fire & Rescue attended the June 3 meeting. Stetar said the police department is facing limitations patrolling the lake during its busiest season. With the Fourth of July celebration and AquaPalooza events coming in about two weeks, he said officers are prepping for long days on the lake.

cont.
“The key thing is resources,” he said. “We’re having a real difficult time getting reserve officers, because there are so many full-time openings out there.”
Alderman Bill Nichols said tougher ordinances and a heavier hand by law enforcement could stop inappropriate behavior on the lake, with Devil’s Hollow Cove being the main concern.
“We need to be aggressive about it,” he said. “We have people calling because their grandkids are sitting there and there’s a DJ out there playing every other word you don’t want to hear.”
Moore suggested police should patrol the Sandy Creek area in a “more concealed manner” in order to catch violators in the act. He said since a particular group is regularly breaking the law, writing a citation may stop the reckless behavior in that area.
City Manager Dan Dodson said the city is allowed to designate different zones, restrict uses, create curfews and noise limitations to certain areas of the lake. But he added any restrictions must be able to be upheld in court.
“So it’s got to be reasonable,” he said.

I bet the fishermen against wake boats are very in favor of this.

I couldn't believe it but the forum I saw this on originally (which is the site were they wine about the wakeboarders) there has been no replies on it. on a side note would i be considered a wakeboarder now that I trade the fishing boat for an inboard ski boat
? just a though I had although I will probably never get on a board but I will pull people on them.

I hope they will still be your friends
Even if they stepped up patrols does anyone think they would make an impact?

None-local question. Is Devil's Hollow Cove the same as Devil's Cove?

What are these grand parents doing in Devil's Cove with their grand kids? It's a big lake, go somewhere else.

That's understandable then...but a little hard to enforce.

I can somewhat empathize with the people along the Jonestown area. But no sympathy for those people who are in Devil's Cove and they have even less sense to let their grand children hang out on the dock.
X2 to Owtlaw's point

I hate this growing buzz kill attitude everywhere. Devils Cove is a nice place because it's one of the few places you can go and get crazy. But it takes a few naiive homeowners to ruin it for all.
