Audio: side firing sub?
Dec 23rd, 2011 at 9:11am

Hey guys,

I currently have a side firing Polk 10 in my boat. My buddy was awesome enough to buy me another amp to power easily another 10. So I'll need to make another box. I'm curious why the owner put in the 10 side firing as opposed to facing the vents on the back seat, that project towards the cockpit? I will need to make another box, curious if I should do another side firing or have it face the cockpit. Need to understand this better.

do you have a pic?  is it a space issue?  sounds like it may be a band pass thing.  but i need to see it to make sure.  if its surface mounted then there is no real reason.  keep in mind that sub frequencies are omni directional so that you don't really need it pointed at you to get the impact of it.  also if you go with 2 subs you wanna make sure that you set them up correctly,  some boxes can actually make the phase response different then the one you already have, causing a phase issue then it will be like you never added the second sub.  any way give a bit more issue.  even though car and boat audio is not my thing i can talk theory and law all day in acoustics.

Here is the classified from the boat. There's a pic of the rear bench:

I can take one in a week or two when I go out to the marina again. But basically, imagine the back seat. There's a fresh water holding tank in the middle. On the right (as you face it) is a sub box that occupies the whole space and it fires to the boat's side.

i see what looks like a sub firing behind the passenger seat?  also here is a web site of a very cheesy band pass that probobly has no math behind it.  but to give you idea see how the box is sealed all the energy comes out the ports the theory is that it acts like a natural x-over and you get more sub BTW do not buy into it there is a reason we don't use it in the pro world.

Capt Y., my Sunsation 32 MCOB have side 10" Subs as well.  The port Sub is is directly beside the drivers bolster and the starboard is behind the rear bolster.  The Subs don't have boxes.  Beneath the rear seat are two six inch speakers.  I think the last owner had the subs installed on the side is that there is MUCH more room there.  The rear seat space is mostly taken up by the fresh H2O tank the the batteries (there are 4 in my Sunny...2 starting/house batteries and two for the sound system) so I think the rear bench space would not be a good option for the subs.  My Baja had rear subs, and they were ok...just OK.  I think the sides are a better solution as it places the bass more in the center of the cockpit space vs the rear of the boat.

What subs are you running in the Free Air setup? Like someone said above, unless you are running the subs in an enclosed area, like the back of a car) the direction doesnt matter too too much in the cockpit, it will effect it a little as far as noise carrying goes though. Especially underway.

Mine has two grates for twelves for ventilation where those two speaker holes are pictured.

G, do you have pictures of your setup? I'm trying to decide what to do. I would like to get two or four more 6.5s as well.

Capt Y., I'll have the boat out tomorrow on Lake LBJ.  I'll take some shots of the set-up.

Ok, that post was from yesterday, so that means at some point today, or tonight we may see some photos from G, but with a 9 hour time difference, I will have to wait till around Saturday Morning to see anything. Works for me! I love pics!! Enjoy LBJ! My truck almost slid into the water at the Yacht Club ramp during the summer (very slick that day). Hopefully you dont run into anything like that Smiley

On the subs, like stated before, side, or rear, I think more of a personal preference thing. Nothing wrong with the side ones, ini fact, I would have rather had em that way, but since Nordic likes to put saddle tanks there, I am screwed on that note. Oh well. Good luck!

Well mine is a little different than G's because mine are under the bench projecting towards the sides of the boat. From what I understand, his are in the sides projecting towards the cockpit.

Ah, I getcha. I have seen a lot of inversely mounted subs, never free air though. I wonder how air space requirements differ for an inversely mounted sub... I may have to look that one up for fun and hahas Smiley
