Summer gas prices
Jan 13th, 2011 at 8:23am

I was comfortable with marina prices this summer, but I think I may be investing in a big gas can this year. If we're already near $4 a gallon, ouch ouch ouch.

I am still gathering all the details, but if gas is purchased on land then you can write off the road tax for each gallon purchased. I was told it is around $.26 per gallon. All you have to do is show that it was not used on the road. The fuel docks still charge this as well is what I was also told.

Like I said I am still researching this and if anyone else has some details please comment.

Hi guys,

I do this every year.   My accountant is a huge wakeboard guy and he turned me on to it.

Just keep your boat gas receipts.   I usually make a copy of them because the ink on the thermal paper usually fades after a while.

Add up the number of gallons, fill in the one page state refund form (see below) and mail in.   They will ask for documentation so the last couple of years, I've been including the copies of my receipts when I first mail it in.  You will have to circle key data on each receipt - easy to do.

Fairly quick process.  I usually get a check in about a month.

They will only go back one year from date submitted.

I did get challanged on some of my totals one year and wanted to know how I separated my gas purchases from boat and cars.   I told them I only used premium for my BMW and unlead for the boat.  All my claim receipts were for unlead.    They were still going to deny a bunch of my receipts so I asked for a hearing.   Two weeks later I got a settlement check.

It's not huge bucks.   But every bit helps.   I usually get about $40-75 a year.

Also, I do include any receipts for gas purchased for my riding lawnmover.  So fuel for tractors, etc. can also be claimed.

Before moving to Austin from KC, and since I boated at LOTO all the time, I was turned on to this road tax topic.  I ended up doing it for 2 years in MO.   About $80 a year back to me.   This is new news to me that same thing can happen here in TX.  I"m all over this.  It'll be easy for me to keep track of boat gas only, since I put all gas purchases on my account at LWM.  Thanks for bringing this up.  I'll take whatever I can get.

That would be pretty cool if I didn't have so many stairs from the parking lot to the marina!
