Going to hit up Lake Austin tomorrow
Jul 12th, 2010 at 5:30pm

Going to launch by my sisters house in Steiners Ranch tomorrow. I just have a few questions. Is there a speed limit also are there any hazards I should be looking for? Any info would be most helpful. Thanks.

Dan

nice lake.  gets rocky near the dam. i don't believe there is a speed limit.  here is something I found online

GPS waypoints/coordinates for Lake Austin:
Submitted by David A. McClung

Who cares about Lake Austin? During the Region 7 TABC Top Six Tournament in March 1996, two bass over 8 lbs were brought to the scales. I know of at least one other bass over 8 lbs caught during the spring of '96. Pictures of fish over 10 lbs have been in the paper. Lake Austin is a twenty mile long river channel type of lake. It is the only lake in the Highland chain with extensive vegetation where you can run your big motor. Town Lake in Austin also produces good fish, but is restricted to electric motors and canoes.

Lake Austin is normally drawn down about 10 feet every other year from mid Jan to late Feb to control the hydrilla. 1997 is a down year.

The best map available of Lake Austin is an Austin city map. Most city maps have the ramps marked as well as creek names.

CAUTION: There is excessive pleasure boat traffic on Lake Austin. The lake is very crowded with pleasure boats, water skiers, and jet skies every weekend during warm weather and has some traffic during the morning and evening most weekdays. YOU MUST DRIVE ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF THE LAKE WHEN RUNNING THE BIG MOTOR.

GPS waypoints/coordinates start at the dam and work up the lake: Each entry starts with Lat/Lon, then waypoint name for the GPS receiver followed by a description of the waypoint. Note that the naming convention used is the first letter of the lake name is the first letter of the waypoint. All points here are named A????? This keeps all of the Lake Austin points together in my receiver. All creek and hollow entrances end in C. All ramps have RMP after the initial A.
The GPS waypoints/coordinates are generally in the water, just off of the topographical feature indicated. The points will help you know where you are on the lake. Extreme CAUTION should be used when navigating to the points. USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!

N 30 23.28 W 97 55.80 ALH2OC - Low Water Crossing Bridge over the upper end of the Lake. You can see Mansfield Dam on Lake Travis from this bridge and can get a bass boat under the bridge at normal level.

I have not verified all of these point on the water so would appreciate feedback from the users. Feel free to email me at dmcclung@arlut.utexas.edu.

Cool! I'll look forward to seeing them! We're starting to get enough great pictures floating around I might need to get a online gallery going for the site.

I'm working on my pics right now.

Sorry for the delay, but I definately enjoyed my time out on your lakes out here. Aquapalooza was a blast! my bro in law ended up renting a formula cruiser with a captain so could enjoy the day without have to launch or drive the boat. That just meant more drinking for me! I could say the event was well put together than I had anticipated and was not a big cluster phuk getting in or out for that matter. Mainly because we were tied at the end. I ended up going to Travis for 2 days and launched out at Mansfield. I wound up hanging at Devil's cove for most of the day and then ended up cruising all the way to mile marker 33 before heading back to Mansfield at the end of the day. I also went to Lake Austin and during midweek and launched from Quilan by my sister's place and cruised all the way to the damn and had lunch at Abel's. That had to be the most smoothest water I have been on for awhile. Here are a few pix of the trip.

These are from Aquapalooza

Pix from Lake Austin

This ramp was just about 1/4 mile down from where I stayed. Quilan Park I think?

Some bridge, don't really know what road that is.

All in all I had a good trip visiting Austin for my first time. The only thing that sucked was driving to get there from Vegas especially pulling a boat. I drove straight through and it took my about 23hrs.  Tongue Hopefully next time my sister has a boat by then so I don't have to take mine. On our last nite we celebrated my daughter and son's birthday and had dinner at Steiner's steakhouse. We sat outside and enjoyed the view from the patio.

the bridge is called the "360 bridge".  it is for capital of texas highway (loop 360).  A little lesser known facts for the bridge is that it was used for movies mainly for people jumping off it and they actually ran a car of the hill to the side into the lake.

Fantastic pictures, thanks for posting them! Love the color scheme of your boat. Does it get pretty hot in the sun?

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun out here!

Thanks Captain and yes it does get hotter than a white gel coat. The seats do too as they are grey.
