Taking spare car battery to Aquapalooza?
Jun 29th, 2010 at 4:45pm

I was thinking of taking a spare car battery to run on during Aquapalooza when there is no music? Any reason I shouldn't?

I don't have a switch, was thinking of swapping over until it goes dead.

That's actually not a bad idea, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I might do it myself if none of the actual experts object. =)

no problem back before there were marine batteries they used car batteries.  all you will need is post to connect the cables.  great idea.

Smart idea.

Maybe even a pair of jumper cables just in case....I'm sure there's going to be some dead batteries out there.

I wonder if there's going to be any running your engine while anchored rules.......if not, I'd be a little cautious of Carbon Monoxide levels/posioning for those floating in the water.

A marine deep cycle is way better.  Lasts longer and deep discharging doesn't kill it.  Correct posts too.  If you do the jumper cable deal and just jump to the regular battary when it goes dead, the good battery tries to "charge" the dead one and pretty soon you have two spare anchors and no battery.

I think I'd try a deep cycle battery and a cheap solar charger.  Radios don't draw much, so it may keep up for days.  Disconnect your primary battery so you are sure to get home.

Sorry I didn't mean to bring jumper cables to use on your spare battery........I meant to bring jumper cables to help out (jump) other boaters who ran down their battery.

I was thinking of switching the posts in the morning and switching back after its toast. That kosher?

Sure, whatever works and won't blow up is my motto.  Wink  A selector switch is handy because it lets you not only choose which batt to run from, but which one to charge.  Start on the good one and switch to the dead one to charge it while running.  If you try to hot swap cables with the motor running you run the risk of damaging the alternator.

I guess I'm spoiled, but once I got used to dual battery banks, I'd no more go out with a single than go out without an anchor.

Sounds like a fine idea to me, enough that I might just be yanking a battery out of my GF's car for the weekend lol

One of these days I'll listen to the preachings of Battery Man Bill and go buy the recommended goodies.
