I got the decals for my cruiser at iboats.  you can pick the font and dimensions and they send you vinyl letters that are easy to apply. Most go that route rather than painting because its less permanent. 
I also followed the naming procedure even though I didn't know the previous name.  We made a party out of it and invited a bunch of folks out for a dinner cruise. Its a bit silly, but makes for good conversation and a good excuse to drink champagne Cool
