How to remove yellowing
Jul 8th, 2013 at 11:08pm

I have an area all along the bumper area of my boat where it is rounded and now yellowing.  I have real a lot of reasons why the gelcoat yellows here and lots of ways to remove it, most regarding acid

I'd like a more softer way to clean the yellow off if possible.  Any ideas.  Thanks

I may be mistaken, but yellowing fiberglass isn't something that can removed with buffing/waxing?

I think it should be as well. Have you tried a good cleaner wax yet? I would ask John from Hula Boat Care though.

Ask John but I am thinking go with Riptide Liquid Compound and then Hang Ten Cleaner Wax.

Thanks for the recommendations gentlemen.

Yellowing is always a pain to deal with. Using muriatic acid is common to get rid of the stains but it does not do much to prevent it from appearing again.

I have a non acid based hull cleaner that is a concentrate which we sell to professional detailers. It is usually diluted 1:3 sprayed on and either wiped or rinsed off. I occasionally sell it in quarts for local friends.

Once the surface is cleaned I would suggest the the gel coat get polished with a compound like Riptide Liquid Compound followed by a cleaner wax like Hang Ten and definitely preserved with a sealant like Big Kahuna Polymer Sealant.

This process will eliminate oxidized gel coat which is porous and allows minerals in the water to bond and stain the gel coat. The cleaner wax will improve the gloss and most importantly the sealant will seal the gel coat reducing the likelihood of future staining for about 4 month.

If you are interested in learning more or have other questions feel free to post or email me at info@hulaboatcare.com
