My rear view mirror has this haze that won't rub off and I'm a little nervous to use chemicals. Any ideas?

Alcohol is safe on plastic but, I suspect the problem is on the coating on the back side.

If it is from the back side I can't think of much.
If it is on the outside of the lens you can try putting a drop of Big Kahuna Polymer Sealant on your fingertip and apply to a corner the wipe off to test and see if will clear the haze up. If it doesn't you can remove it with a mix of iso propyl alcohol and water 50/50 blend.
I am around if you test and want to bounce ideas
