Carlisle Tire failure
May 9th, 2012 at 8:26pm

Found this after the tow home from Lake Travis to San Antonio.
I'm very relieved the tire did not disintegrate at highway speeds.  The tire stayed together, but I think it only had a few miles left before complete failure.  Yes, those are the steel belts sticking out of the tire...and yes the tire is THAT deformed.  This is the second tire to fail since I bought this boat.  The date stamp on the tires indicate they are about 3 years old.

I'm thinking about replacing all of the tires with a new set of NOT Carlisle.  If two from set failed....thinking it is just a matter of time till the rest go.

Thoughts?

Wow holy shit that's a messed up tire and crazy they failed so early. I wouldn't be surprised if my Monterey trailer has 10 year old tires on it that have been champs.

Yuck...tires x 6.

Carlisle were great tire then about five years ago they stop making them here in the usa and started making them in japan or china.  they have had alot of problems since they did that.  but about a year or maybe 2 now they have started to manufacturing in the usa again so hopefully they will be better.  but if you go carlisle make sure they are less than a year old.

I hate Carliisle tires. They are fine if you are towing a couple times a year and the ramp is only a mile or two from your storage place. We replaced all of ours with the Goodyear Marathons from Discount Tire. It was about a $120 difference for a set of four, but it's worth every penny when you sitting on the side of the road at night.

Ditto that.   My Nordic trailer (triple axle) came with Carlisles new.   They hung in for awhile, then failed in back-to-back trips.  Middle axles.  I replaced each time with a new Carlisle.  Failed again.  All this happened on on I-40, Mojave Desert, mid-August, 119 degrees.  Thought I was going to die from heat stroke while changing, so vowed no more Carlisles.

Went with Goodyear Marathons as well.  More money, but worth it.

Picked up the new tires today.  Went with Maxxis.  Good reviews.  My trailer has 14 inch wheels, which really limits choices with ply and load range.  I looked all across the major brands and none with any better than load range C and 6 ply.  I would have to buy an entire set of 15 or 16 inch wheels to get sturdier tires.  Not quite ready for that.
I'll keep you posted on how these hold up.

My Carlisles are pretty new.  Last season had the middle axle tread seperate from the side walls.  the tread was rolling the lane next to me and I am glad the side walls stayed on the rim or it would have messed up my rim.
