today's project
May 6th, 2012 at 8:46pm

today's project was to try and help make the boat be easier to launch. it was over 32 inches off the ground because of the original trailer having the axles under the boat and under the springs. so I disassembled and moved the axles to the top of the springs. this dropped it about four or more inches. it is almost low enough that I can get in it with out a step stool. but now I need shorter bolts for the fenders as they were almost in the tires. but it should be easier to launch now and not have to be so deep.

Nice man! You could always dremel off the end of the bolts and hit em with a file to save a few bucks.

yep it is .07 foot over  Grin  the funny part was it was easier to launch when the lake was down because the ramp was steeper.  right now the are flatter.

so tonight I got outside and did some more work on the trailer.  I decided to take the long side runners and cut them down to fit under the keel from the front to the first cross member.  Hopefully it will support the front more and help guide the boat on the trailer.  you can also see damage to the keel done by the prior ownes because of the front roller bracket has actually been letting the boat sit and rub on the bracket as the roller center is even with the top of the bracket.  I am going to replace this soon.  but after this is done hopefully the boat will launch better and load easier.  but this is why I have always tried to get the boat as deep as possible so it will just float off.  but it does make it harder to load that way.  also every time I get under the boat I am reminded of the fiberglass work I need to do once the trailer will not rub the boat raw again.

and the new shorter side runners.

its funny that all my projects go from a day to multiple days.  but I finally got a chance to adjust the the fender mount to give more room for the tires.  I had to grind the welds to get the brackets off the frame.  but I bolted it back on so If I need to adjust it later I can.

and of course the best part is my helper

ok i got to do some more work on the trailer today as I wait for the parts to show up for the distributor.

here are my new side guide because without them the boat will float off the side of the trailer.  this weekend it actually floated over the top of one of the guides and was a pain to get it to stay straight.

...

...

...

...

I also modified the bracket that the boat was setting on and straighten it.  it was straight across.

ok so I am still having the issue with the boat bogging down at full throttle.  so I am going to put my race ready holley 4779-4 double pumper carb.  if this doesn't fix it I have ran out of ideas and things to replace.

Nathan, that doesn't look like a marine carb?  Have you checked the timing? I'm having trouble with my port engine right now and it turns out my distributor advance springs rusted out. I've put in new springs but now am having to map the timing and advance curve to get it to run right.  Just throwing out timing as something else to check if you haven't yet. I can sympathize Sad

just went through the distrubutor and springs and the advance are fine.  the points are new.  the boat is a 1972 there wasnt really any marine specific carbs at that time.  but the holley is just to see if it solves the problem then the original crater afb is going back on.  if this works then I know that the issue is in the carter.  there is just about nothing I have not replaced or fixed.
