Nordic deal gone bad
May 17th, 2011 at 6:22pm

I was going to let this one go, but it just got way past the point of ridiculous.

I found a 28' Nordic Heat in Oklahoma City a couple weeks ago. Looked awesome, great custom exterior and some cool interior work, amazing stereo, new engine and was supposedly a "9." I made the guy an offer and he grudgingly took it.

In2Deep offered to come check it out with me and pull it with his tow vehicle. So last Friday we get up at the crack of way the hell before dawn and start up to OKC.

We get up there and immediately bells start going off in our heads. The keel didn't only show signs of beaching, it was worn through the gel coat and had smoothed it down to a flat surface. The sides of the boat looked very good except for some small areas of chips, ones that should have been noted by the seller. We get around the back of the boat, the prop looks completely wrong, there's a nickel sized chunk missing and the skeg is missing a chunk the size of a quarter. All were not mentioned by the seller.

We get in and generally the interior is in good shape. I find a large patch of yellowing gel coat on the top, one that should have been mentioned. In2Deep notices a few electrical problems that were not mentioned. We check the hour meter, this 200-300 hour hull the owner claimed, turned out to be a 410 hour hull. Big difference.

The voice in my head started saying "run."

We put it on the water and take it for a spin. The whole boat shakes under load. Once it gets under throttle, the thing is an absolute pig, it takes WOT to get it to sluggishly plane out. Once it does plane out, it gets to 52 or so and the engine starts cutting out. I assumed, but wouldn't bet on it being the rev limiter.

We start pulling on to the trailer and the owner asks me what I think. I tell him my thoughts on the boat and he tells me he won't budge a dollar on price, in fact he regrets accepting my offer because it was so low in the first place.

This was Friday. Fast forward to today. I get a text message from him saying:

Quote:
Hah. Come to find out I've had a completely wrong prop on this whole time. He said that prop is for a 18-20 ft bass boat. Said the new prop should give me another 10 MPH extra.

Fu(king idiot liar. All the problems this boat had, he had to of known about and flat out lied to me about. We should have dropped the trailer at the ramp and told him to go to hell.

thats too bad there is always other boats in the water.  look for a checkmate!!  I think you would be inpressed.  there is a forum for them were they always have some for sale.  checkmates will run 70-80 with a single motor.

Sounds like a boat you would have been towing a lot!

Was a cluster for sure.  I just don't understand how someone selling something of value, and after several detailed conversations with a prospective buyer, can consistently misrepresent.  Especially, when the buyer will be travelling a very long distance, and will inspect the object before writing the check.

Boggles my mind.

Regardless, as Yarr and I said a thousand times during that long drive back....these things happen for a reason.  Especially on a Friday the 13th.

I wonder what he was thinking. That these guys would show up and just not notice all these glaring problems he made it a point not to mention?

Wow that first one is pretty awesome, that's what I'm looking for. I am considering sitting this season out and buying a boat at a higher price point next year, seems like it might be less potential for problems down the road.

Still some good deals to be had. Dealers are getting motivated to clear inventory.

Well Evan, you lucked out and got a nice new Sunsation instead, so it did work out for a reason.

I lucked out and found my Nordic for a great deal, bought out of California, so I was VERY skeptical, but it was all worth it in the end.

You are absolutely right. This boat is easily twice the boat that one was for not really much more money. Definitely worth waiting for!

Looking forward to running out there with you and all the other gents on here! She is a beaut, I know I want to get some nice moving shots/movies of my Nordic, I can imagine you would want some of the Sunsation as well. My father in law is all about that stuff (21' Bass boat with a 225 on her, so he can keep up for the most part).

hum a 21' bass boat with a 225 will do 70 easy.  put a 300 on the same boat and you get 80-90 or above.  in a very light boat. those new bass boats are nuts but i would love to have one.
