Gel coat touch up?
Jul 5th, 2010 at 8:59pm

Great weekend out, however had one bad thing happen. We were tied up to the dock overnight and I had six bumpers between the boat and dock. I thought that was plenty. Somehow two fell off the rear and there was a metal ring that took a chunk of gel coat out. I cleaned up the scratches nicely with some rubbing compound. But I have a chunk about the size of a nickel of gel coat missing I need to fix.

What are my options for fixing this up?

Lesson learned, just pull the god damn boat out of the water.

I have heard good things about gel coat repair kits.  I believe that you can get them from academy but if not west marine should have it.

Hey Captain,

It was good meeting you.   Sorry to hear about your boat.

I recommend Spectrum Gel Coat Repair.   The biggest problem with the Academy/West Marine kits is mixing the right color.....really hard to do.   With Spectrum, they will send a small repair kit that will match exactly your boat manufacturer colors.   Cost is very reasonable.

http://www.spectrumcolor.com/default_main.asp

Instructions are attached below.

Spectrum Color Gel Coat Patch Paste Repair

SPECTRUM GEL COAT Patch paste is an easy to use repair system. Patch Paste allows even the inexperienced to make professional looking cosmetic repairs to damaged gel coat in the form of dock dings, scratches, trailer, gouges, nicks, screw holes, canvas button holes, blisters, and many other episodes.

Spectrum gel coat Patch paste is a factory color matched gel coat that is converted into a paste form that spreads like Vaseline, sets in approximately 30-40 minutes, and will stay in place on vertical and overhead surfaces.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll be looking in to those after Aquapalooza. Hopefully I won't be picking up any new ones.
