I got pulled over. Radar detectors?
Oct 8th, 2009 at 6:07pm

I was driving back from Abilene today and got popped driving a dangerous back road 76 in a 70. He was nice enough about it and gave me a written warning. It looked like the "I want to know what you are up to" stop and when he found that I was but a humble salesman tired from driving too damn much, he let me off.

But this could have been avoided with some beeps from a detector. Anyone have some reasonably priced favorites?

I always love getting pulled over in the middle of nowhere driving a safe speed. I suppose technically it is illegal, but why aren't they pulling over every one of the cars driving that speed? Which would be all of them.

I have never liked radar detectors, all the beeping and false positives makes them more trouble than they are worth.

That's actually the biggest thing holding me back. I always hate riding with people whose radar detector is beeping constantly in neighborhoods and near shopping centers. I don't want to add extra frustration to my few thousand miles a month for work!

you can get them cheap, like 30 bucks. Return it if you hate it.

I didn't think they were that cheap, maybe I will give it a try! It's just funny though, I can pass cops going just as fast or faster since and noooooo worries.

I put this one in my daily driver and got a second one for my toy car. My friend also purchased one. It looks cool, has some cool features and seems to work good. I have had detectors every since I first started driving. The last one I had went off all the friggin time and seemed to just go off every few seconds at random. This one is more reliable and trustworthy. I paid around 130.00 for each one of mine.

That's a really cool display. How often is the highway patrol using laser around here?

Typically when your detector reads laser... you are busted. Laser is a small diameter beam with no reflections that can be detected. So weather the highway patrol is using laser alot or little... you don't stand a chance. Radar however,  bounces around all over the place, that's why we can pick up radar and slow down before a direct hit. Personally I have never had a laser detector go off, on ANY of my radar detectors over the many years of owning one.

I've decided not to get one, I've been driving for ten years and that's the first time I got pulled over for doing six over. I'm going to play the numbers on this one.

ha ha, I have a friend that never used one, but every time he borrowed one from someone, he got a ticket. So, he says, "According to my past record, my chances are better not to own a radar detector", lol!

I bet it's a constant beep on I35 during the day. You know there are always a ton of cops, so might as well keep a realistic speed.

I've done quite a bit of research on this topic lately -- and am just about to pull the trigger.  If you're looking for a radar detector that really works, and works for you, there are really only two choices in the markeplace right now.   Steep on price ($500), but avoiding just 2 tickets would pay for.  From the traffic enforcement presence I see in my area of town, and between my home and where I work -- I consider it a "when" not "if" I get a ticket....so a detector is mandatory driving equipment.

I'm going to buy the Escort.  Read the features this dynamo has -- and you'll see why the constant beeping issue goes away, and other cool things.

I got pulled over again in the middle of nowhere like last time. So I figure the odds are I'll get busted again. I bought one that looks like Frog's picture from Best Buy. It's 8000 series (I can't remember the exact number) from Escort. Has been working very well so far.
