Title: Fog or no fog
Post by JC on Oct 6th, 2013 at 12:04am
As the end of the season approaches, it's time to consider winterization.
Obviously we need to drain the cooling system, change eng oil, prepare the fuel system for hibernation but what abt protecting the eng internals?

Who fogs? What product do you use? 20wt eng oil, spray products, ???

What else? Loosen rockers? Fill eng with anti-freeze?

I fog every time I know it will sit for more then a month. I use storage seal spray. Additionally I pump my fuel out and replace fuel in the tank with a stabilized, 2 cycle oil and ethanol free fuel mix. All I could find these days is race fuel. I added my 5 gallon mixture to each side. I ran it through the engine then fogged them out. I then drained the bowls in my carbs, Oil and filters got changed, drive lube got changed and drives  drives removed insected and greased where needed. Engines were cleaned and coated with marine CRC and greased where needed. Engines drained of water and filled with non toxic anti freeze. The entire process for my two engines cost me just over 300 dollars and a full days effort.

I don't like to rely on hope and luck.

My engines are now sitting with new valves and springs and rockers in a zip lock bag.

If you want to do more then the basic I outlined, removing exhaust and pressure checking them as you remove the valve covers to relax the springs would be a good thing to do if you suffer from OCD like me. Personally I choose just to replace the springs every three or 4 seasons instead.

Do you purchase the storage seal spray online? I don't remember ever seeing it on the shelf anywhere.

storage seal is a quicksilver product about 8 bucks a can. I run an entire can in each. Any dealer maybe Academy. I buy it by the case. I especially like it because the engine will run on it and often use it to troubleshoot too. The other brands it will not.

I pumped out all my ethanol laced fuel a couple of weeks ago. Called around yesterday looking for ethanol free gas and the only place I can find it is at Austin Perf. It costs $10+/gal.
Anyone know a place to find it cheaper??

Found some blue Av gas (100LL) for $4.60/gal.
Mixed 10 gals with 2-stroke oil and some stabilizer. Ran both engs till they started smoking and then fogged.

Pulled the coolant hoses and got most of the water out. I'll finish draining the blocks and exh manifolds when I pull the engs out in a couple of weeks.
