Title: I have been working on the pontoon
Post by nathan on Mar 29th, 2013 at 9:17pm
I figured I would update everyone on my progress

I have removed the rotten seats and added two storage boxes to the back. so now I have a fully open front deck.

I also replaced the front driving lights

here is the engine and new gas tank.

I have also been woring on the motor and the water system.  so tonight since the motor apart waiting on parts I figured I would fix the terrible paint on the motor since there was no paint left on the top.  so I took all the decals off, sanded and cleaned the housing and motor.  here are the pictures i will get better ones tomorrow.

before paint

after

so that is what I have been doing.

Nice improvements! Looks like you'll be set for some fun with the family after some new benches.

new benches, we are just going with lawn chairs for that true redneck affect.  ;D
all my parts are now in and now I get to put her back together.

ok I replaced the thermostat and water impeller.  the person that I got it from did not use a the correct one as it was not thick enough.  so they used a washer to make up the difference  :-? .  I also finally was able to get the engine to run again.  the pick up tube in the tank sucked up sludge in the tank.  it is now running like it is supposed to.  so tomorrow we will take it out for a test run.  8-)

ok well everything was going good but then I noticed the motor change it tone so we headed to the shore.  It was a good thing I did as the motor started to go back to the same thing it did before and the primer ball would stay squeezed and not reflate until I disconnected the fuel line from the tank.  It uses the a 12 gallon portable atwood tank.  anyone have any ideas on what is going on?  I think I need help.

Does the gas tank have  some vent control that needs to be opened/messed with to keep from drawing too much of a vacuum? Just guessing as I've never messed with a portable fuel tank.

Title: Re: I have been working on the pontoon
Post by nathan on Apr 7th, 2013 at 8:04pm
that may be something I need to look unto as the new tanks (due to epa regs) do not have a built in vent.

Title: Re: I have been working on the pontoon

went to attwood's site and they now make a Fuel Demand Valve that is supposed to work with the ventless tanks that they make now.  I will try this and maybe see if the cap off of my other older tank will fit the new one.  next time out I will take both the big tank and the little six gallon tank as well.

Ok I replaced all the fuel lines, removed the bulb, installed a cap off one of my older tanks.  and to night I was able to finally get her to run for a good amount of time.  still not perfect but defiantly better than before.  now I just have to get the trolling motor that I also finished rebuilding on the boat (the back up motor) so we can go give it another try. April told me that I was not allowed to take it back out until I had a nothing way to move the boat incase the engine gave us issues again.

So you've been idling it on the muffs and been pretty reliable so far?

Title: Re: I have been working on the pontoon
Post by nathan on May 1st, 2013 at 9:13am
muffs do not work so I picked up a big cheap trash can.  last night it ran for a good 30 to 40 minutes without issue and would rev every time I hit the throttle.  so now it is time to take it the lake and try her as I can always seem to get them to run in the drive way but the lake is a different story.  ;)

Haha yes, it seems problems only want to rear their head when the boat is far far far far from the trailer or lift :)

story of my boating life! that is also why I do not get far from the shore for now.

Last weekend mine decided to start acting up when I was up near Cow Creek. I was going to be cursing up a storm if I had to run back on one engine but thankfully she kept it together well enough to make it home. That would have been a LOOOOONG ride.

since 2006 I have only had one boat that I trusted to go anywhere it was a 1976 tri sonic 18 foot bow rider.  had a ford 302 motor in it.  when I purchased it is the owner said that the only thing on the boat worth saving was the motor and outdrive.  I got the boat home and started cleaning it up and found that the boat was in great shape.  all I did to it was a tune up and replace some of the wood in bow cushion.  loved that boat and would still have it today but we were out on travis when there was a ton of chop and because of that cassidi started to get thrown back and forth in the seat.  it scared her and she would never get back in the boat.  she only wondered what was happening with the boat when we dropped it off at the new owners house and left it.  last I knew the guy I sold it to was still enjoying it with no issues. :-/

I got some more done on the pontoon.  finished painting the motor just to make it look better

I also finished replacing the head on the trolling motor that I picked up

http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee54/nbracing42/1977%20playcraft%2024%20pontoon/IMAG0360_zps6d044efb.jpg

I also got the mount on the front plus I picked up and installed a 3 step telescoping ladder for $30 from ebay. also mounted the battery boxes for the 2 batteries for the 24v trolling motor.

we plan to take it out next weekend.  I have to get a propeller shaft bearing cage as the one on the motor has been repaired and I am afraid that if I took it off it would break.  right now the lower unit is leaking a small amount of oil by the prop.  but not enough to cause an issue while on the water.

we will see this weekend and you all will know if it went good or bad.  tested the trolling motor on the boat today and I know it works correctly!! if all goes well on the first trip I plan on being out all three days!!!!

well I made it out today but when the fuel filter was just about dry and did not want to get away from the bank.  I guess I am going to drain the tank again to make sure it is clean.  the lake must be my kryptonite.  works great in the driveway but messes up at the lake.  >:(

well as I was working on draining the fuel tank I started messing with the motor and noticed that the transom had more flex that it had prior.  I was hoping to put this off until the winter but with the amount of movement I decided that I needed to fix it.  so I took off the motor and disassembled the transom.  here are the pictures of it disassembled.

here is how much the motor was leaning in at the bottom

ok the transom is done.  I wanted to use marine plywood but no one around here carries it. they all have cdx (treated) and one has ccx (Treated that is none corrosive to aluminum).  I used some panels that I had because summer is here and I want to enjoy the boat and do not have the time or money to wait for plywood to arrive. I painted them as I was unsure if they were treated but I believe they are.  when I redo the deck this or next winter I will redo the transom with new marine plywood and aluminum.  I did replace the bolts this time.  the best part is there is no movement in the motor anymore!

ok I have not updated this in a few so here we go. after I got new fuel in the tank the boat was still not running the best. I then rebuilt the fuel pump and it was better so my daughters and I went to the lake. the boat would idle fine and go in reverse fine. but when I put it in forward it would flood down. I found that the lower head bolts need to be tightened. I did and it put the compression back over 100. I am at 110 and 120 on the cylinders. now the boat will go in to forward now with out flooding down. now off to the lake this weekend.

as I am still the mechanic on this boat and my parents said that I it had to run so I picked up a 1974 85hp evinrude for the boat today with controls for 300 dollars!!  now to clean it up get it on the pontoon and enjoy a real motor.

Title: Re: I have been working on the pontoon
Post by nathan on Jun 27th, 2013 at 9:06pm
ok I needed to get the 300 dollar motor out of my truck but I did not want it on my floor.  plus that I needed a place to work on it in the garage and a place to put the 50 hp force when it comes off.  so I had a Harbor freight furniture dolly and some old 2x4s. so after some work I built a outboard motor stand that is on wheels!!  8-) :)

yep but I can use the boat anytime and for now we are going to keep it here.  that is until I start on the chaparral which I may wait until it cools down. ;)

ok I spent my 4th running the lines and wires for the 85 evinrude on the pontoon.  so tonight I decided to see if I could get it to start.  so I added gas put the choke on and after about 10 turn revolutions the motor fired off.  not bad for sitting for 6 years.  it already starts and runs better then the 50hp force.

that is why I was looking for a Johnson or evinrude.  in my opinion they are the best outboards on the market.  especially the old ones.  the original owner always let the motor run out of gas before pulling the boat out of the water and the last time they had it out was no different.  when I took the cards apart to clean the epoxy (almost all of them have from the stator) off them they were extremely clean.  I am planning a water trip this weekend.  I had to add extra support to help with the weight of the bigger motor.  we planned to add a few motor c channel cross members to add to the deck on the rear.  so this is a temporary fix so we can use the boat.  but it is holding the motor up better than the little engine was without it.

it is amazing the difference that 35 hp makes.  or is it just the difference a good motor makes.  took the pontoon out today for a quick run as we were dodging rain.  the boat came off the trailer easier, had a lot more pick up, and best of all it turns a lot better.  next weekend we will take it out for an extended run.  I am very happy with the performance so far.  I put more work into the force motor with less improvement.

even thought it was a short ride due to the rain it was nice to drive it on the trailer and not be saying "well that sucked".  we are going to take it back out next weekend if the weather permits.

well I am bring this back up to the top because my parents and I were talking this weekend and have came up with a plan.  that plan is that instead of starting on the cruiser right now we are going to redo the pontoon.  The pontoon needs a lot less work.  I will redo the deck, build some seats and just make everything new.  I am happy about this as it gives me time to find better stuff for the cruiser or talk my parents into selling it. as always I will take pictures and keep you guys updated.

That sounds like a better plan. It will get you on the water sooner and more comfortably.
