Title: Upholstery Update - Need Advice
Post by Shaka on Apr 5th, 2010 at 9:51am
sorry for the new thread and lack of photos (can't locate my camera and my phone takes crappy photos).

So, I had my sunpad and two bench seat lids recovered with new vinyl over at Cecils.   I went and picked them up last Friday.

Good News - excellent job, looks great, really well done

Bad News - wrong color

He said he couldn't match the putty and off white colors, so he just did them in bright white.    They look good but when you put them in the boat they don't match.

I'm bummed that they don't match, but a little happy to have the "new" look.

I've found several marine upholstery dealers online that have the right colors.....so it looks like Cecil's was just lazy in trying to match colors.

Should I purchase the vinyl online and take it back and have it redone?

Should I just live with it.....afterall it is a 14 year old boat?   Maybe that bright white will turn off white after the kids get a hold of it?

I've already spent $700....should I throw good money after bad???

you could always get some vinyl die paint and paint the rest  to match the new ones.  but I would take it back and take print outs of what you found because in my mind they should have oked the change before doing the work.  If you didn't ok or ask for white then they didn't correctly complete the job.  it would be like taking your car to get repainted and they paint it white instead silver and said they couldn't get silver.

I feel for ya. That's a big bummer. That's a large percentage of yoyr boats vinyl. They need to make this right. You are going to be mad every time you get in the boat now.

OK, I went and took another look and it really doesn't match at all.

So, I ordered new vinyl from Gary's Upholstry today.

When it arrives, I going to take it over to Cardenas and get a price.

I would love to turn this around quickly and be on the water in a couple of weeks.

Wish me luck!

That's the way to go, you'll be so much happier that you had it redone right. We want to see you out on the water soon!

I'd have a long conversation with Cecil about not letting you know he couldn't match it and letting you decide for yourself. He really should do a reinstall for free when you get your material.

If not, I hope Santiago (Cardenas) can get you fixed up with a minimum of hassle.

Picked up the new upholstery.   If it stops drizzling I'll get them installed.   Update and Pics are forthcoming.

Good man! I hate how it feels having my vehicles in pieces, I don't feel right until they are whole again.

Hey Outlaw, I owe you a six pack.

Cardenas was a great recommendation.

I went by and talked to Santiago and explained my situation.   He advised me to try and work it out with Cecils.  He understood where I was coming from and agreed that Cecil's didn't try very hard to match the vinyl.

I went back to Cecils but wasn't able to work something out.   I showed him the vinyl I purchased on-line and tried to negeotiate a fair labor charge to have it redone.   The manager's name is Gene and he was just an ass.  His rework quote was double Cardenas's quote.

So, I took it back to Cardenas and Santiago did the job in just two days!!   I couldn't believe it.

They did a really nice job and followed all the rework instructions perfectly.

I'm very pleased with Cardenad Upholstery.

Cecil's does good work too.....just more expensive and IMO didn't try very hard to match colors.

I took the seats off the boat and hand carried them in to save on labor.  Just a FYI - reinstalling the sun pad was a major pain.

Here are a couple of shots of the new vinyl (sun pad, stern bench seat bottoms and bow seat bottoms).   The last pic is a comparison of the Cecil cover and the new vinyl.   Yes Cardenas saved the Cecil covers for me just in case I might need them.

Thanks again Outlaw and AB Forums.

Glad Santiago hooked you up.  Been using him for 20 years now, and never disappointed.  The boat looks real nice!

That looks absolutely fantastic Shaka!

I guess I know where I'm going when the time comes. It's good to be able to get solid info on who is good and who sucks around town.

Those two are so far off it's not even funny. Glad you had it redone.

LAZY??? Dude why did you pay??? bet if you came to my shop i could show you the "bright white" they have it on sale for 5$ a yard at "capitol city" upholstery supply.

Once you leave its gonna be hard to get him to do it again... IF ITS NOT RIGHT, DONT PAY...  "looks great, wrong color" what kinda crap is that,.... Hell ya take it back make him redo it, maybe he will think twice about it the next time....

I know this is my first post, but I have a shop in town and people all ways bring me other peoples f**ck up sh*t.. And my first Question is "Why did you pay?"

If you'd take a minute to read the rest of the thread, you'll see that he had to take it to another shop, but it's now fixed.
